Gamblers Anonymous vs. professional treatment

GA is free, everywhere and has helped people for decades. Treatment is clinical, structured and built to change how you think. They are not competitors.

Gamblers Anonymous vs. professional treatment

What Gamblers Anonymous is

Gamblers Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship, founded in 1957, of people who meet to help each other stop gambling. Meetings are free, run by members rather than professionals, and available in person in most cities and online. Its companion program, Gam-Anon, is for family members.

What GA does well

  • Community with people who understand, immediately and at no cost
  • Accountability: a sponsor, regular meetings, people who notice when you disappear
  • Long-term support that continues for years after any formal treatment ends
  • A pressure relief process where experienced members help you face your finances

What GA is not

GA is not clinical care. It does not diagnose, does not treat the depression, anxiety, ADHD or substance use that often travel with gambling disorder, and does not offer individual therapy. Some people find the 12-step framework does not fit them. And a meeting a few nights a week may not be enough structure when gambling has been daily.

What professional treatment adds

  • A clinical assessment and a diagnosis, including co-occurring conditions
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy from counselors certified in gambling disorder, which has the strongest evidence base for this condition
  • Psychiatric care and medication management where needed
  • Structured time: in residential treatment, all of it; in outpatient, several days a week
  • Family therapy and a financial recovery plan built into the program

Our recommendation

Use both. Treatment addresses the disorder; GA provides the community that keeps recovery going long after treatment ends. Once we open, Outpost clients will be connected to meetings during treatment and will leave with a meeting plan as part of aftercare. If you are choosing where to start: if you have tried GA and kept relapsing, or your situation is severe, start with treatment. If you are early and functioning, start with GA and a counselor, and step up if it is not holding.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gamblers Anonymous free?

Yes. Meetings are free; members may contribute voluntarily.

Does Gamblers Anonymous work?

Many people credit GA with their recovery. Research on 12-step programs for gambling is limited, and dropout rates are high, which is part of why clinicians recommend pairing it with treatment.

Is there a non-religious alternative?

SMART Recovery offers secular, science-based support meetings that include gambling.

Do I have to hit bottom first?

No. Earlier is better. Bottom is not a requirement for either GA or treatment.
