Young men and sports betting addiction

Nearly half of everyone who contacted the National Problem Gambling Helpline in 2025 was between 18 and 34. This is not a coincidence, and it is not weakness.

The numbers

The National Problem Gambling Helpline averaged more than 31,000 contacts a month in 2025. Nearly half came from people ages 18 to 34, and more than 73% cited financial struggles. The American Institute for Boys and Men, summarizing research on credit data from millions of Americans, reported that legal online sports betting was followed by higher rates of bankruptcy, collections and lower credit scores, with young men hit hardest.

Why young men

  • Sports betting is marketed at them. Sportsbook ads run in every game, every podcast and every group chat.
  • The app is always there. Live betting, same-game parlays and player props turn one game into hundreds of decisions.
  • Money is thin and credit is easy. A few losing weekends at 22 can mean debt that takes years to unwind.
  • It looks like a skill. Betting on sports feels like knowledge, not luck. The house edge does not care.
  • Nobody around them sees it as a problem. When everyone in the group chat bets, the one who is drowning stays quiet.

Signs it has crossed the line

Betting on games you would not otherwise watch. Checking lines at work and in bed. Chasing a loss with a bigger bet. Borrowing, cash advances, selling things. Lying to a partner or parent about money. See the full list in signs of a sports betting problem.

Treatment that fits a 25-year-old

Treatment for gambling disorder works at any age. For younger clients, our planned programs will focus on: barriers that survive a phone (bank gambling blocks, self-exclusion, device controls), financial recovery planning while debts are still manageable, dealing with the depression or ADHD that often sits under the betting, and rebuilding a social life that does not run through a sportsbook. Outpatient lets you keep working; residential is for when the pattern is daily and the environment is not changing.

For parents

If your son is in trouble, the most useful thing you can do is get him to an assessment and stop covering the losses. See help for families and gambling and debt.

Frequently asked questions

Is sports betting addiction really a thing in your 20s?

Yes. The 18 to 34 group is now the largest share of helpline contacts nationally.

Can I keep watching sports in recovery?

Many people can, with barriers in place. Some need a break from it early on. Your counselor will help you decide.

What if I only bet on weekends?

Frequency matters less than consequences. If it is causing money, relationship or work problems, it is a problem.

Is treatment confidential from my employer or school?

Yes. Health information is protected under HIPAA.
